"Be a Mountain, Ayah".. A Testament That Creates the Story of an Unbreakable Woman in Gaza

The story of Ayah Dahdoh, a pregnant woman in Gaza, who faced an early labor during the ongoing conflict and managed to survive against the odds while battling difficult conditions in a besieged hospital.

Ayah Dahdoh, a 30-year-old Palestinian woman, faced a premature labor while fleeing within Gaza just two months before her expected delivery. With her body exhausted from repeated evacuations and her bags filled with what remained of her family’s life under constant bombardment, she encountered a dire situation. Her husband, Yasser, was shocked to witness the onset of labor as her severe pain began. At a time when hospitals were operating at minimal capacity due to ongoing sieges, the urgency of the situation increased abnormally.

At home, Ayah received assistance from her mother-in-law, known within the family as "the wise Naila", who used whatever rudimentary tools were available to assist in the childbirth. As the birth progressed, complications arose; while the baby was delivered, the placenta remained lodged inside Ayah, leading to the onset of toxic symptoms. Torn between the peril of staying at home under threat and the danger of going out amidst bombardments, the family ultimately made the decision to transfer her to a medical facility, risking their lives in the process.

Upon arrival at the Al-Sahaba Medical Complex in Gaza City, Ayah underwent an emergency surgery in a war-damaged operating room. She recounted the experience of the surgery team searching for medical instruments using the light from their phones due to electricity outages and the harsh cold, compounded with walls riddled with blast holes. This narrative highlights not only Ayah's personal struggle but also reflects the broader humanitarian crisis faced by women and families in Gaza amid ongoing conflicts, shedding light on resilience and the fight for survival against overwhelming odds.
