Man arrested on suspicion of killing woman with gunshots in Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo

A 46-year-old man was arrested in Praia Grande, Brazil, for allegedly shooting and killing a 40-year-old woman, in a case classified as femicide and domestic violence.

On Saturday morning (7), military police in Praia Grande arrested a 46-year-old man under suspicion of murdering a 40-year-old woman by gunfire. The incident took place in the Vila Sônia neighborhood. When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying on the ground. Despite being rushed to the hospital by emergency services, she did not survive her injuries.

The authorities have categorized this case as femicide and domestic violence. In connection with the crime, a firearm and a vehicle belonging to the suspect were seized by the police. This disturbing event comes amidst rising concerns in São Paulo state, which has experienced a significant increase in the number of femicides, reaching record highs according to recent reports from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP).

Data released at the beginning of the year indicated an 8.1% increase in femicide cases in 2025 compared to the previous year, marking the highest level since statistics were first compiled in 2018. The SSP reported 266 cases of women murdered because of their gender, a rise from 246 cases in 2024, highlighting the escalating issue of violence against women in Brazil.
