Governor of Piauí defines ticket with PT and allies and rejects agreement with Ciro Nogueira
Rafael Fonteles, the governor of Piauí, has formed his electoral ticket while dismissing any potential alliance with Senator Ciro Nogueira.
Rafael Fonteles, the governor of Piauí and favored for reelection, has announced his electoral ticket, turning down any possibility of forming an alliance with Senator Ciro Nogueira. This decision comes after Nogueira reached out to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in late 2025, proposing a deal that would help him secure a Senate reelection in exchange for supporting Fonteles' new term. However, Fonteles' allies rejected this overture, interpreting it as a sign of desperation from Nogueira, especially as Lula's approval ratings remain impressively high in Piauí, sitting above 75% according to recent surveys.
Fonteles’ ticket will be composed entirely of members from the Workers' Party (PT), with Washington Bandeira, a former Secretary of Education, as his vice candidate. This strategy indicates a move towards consolidating support within the party rather than seeking alliances with local political adversaries. On the senatorial front, Fonteles' allies will include Marcelo Castro from the MDB, who is vying for a renewed mandate, alongside Júlio César from the PSD, who was the most voted federal deputy in the last elections.
The developments in Piauí's political landscape highlight the ongoing strategic calculations of local leaders while reflecting broader national trends. The refusal to collaborate with Nogueira underscores a robust confidence among Fonteles' supporters in maintaining a unified political front in the upcoming elections, which may have far-reaching implications on voter sentiments and the overall dynamics of power in the region as the elections approach.
