Mother and son were shot dead when they were returning to their farm in El Carmen

An 83-year-old woman and her 53-year-old son were shot dead while returning home in El Carmen, Ecuador.

On Saturday, March 7, a tragic shooting occurred in the canton of El Carmen, Manabí province, Ecuador, resulting in the deaths of Blanca Zamora Basurto, 83, and her son Antonio Mecías Zamora, 53. The pair, who were engaged in banana production, were ambushed as they were just a few meters away from their home in the La Raíz area when they were attacked by assailants who opened fire on their vehicle. The shooting left the community in shock and raised serious concerns about security in the region.

Initial investigations revealed that the victims were traveling in a pickup truck from the center of El Carmen when they were intercepted. The aftermath was chaotic, with witnesses initially believing that the scene could have been a traffic accident due to the way the vehicle was found. Upon closer inspection, however, it became clear that the victims had suffered fatal gunshot wounds, prompting local authorities to launch a homicide investigation, given the rising concerns over violence in rural areas.

This incident highlights the increasing insecurity in rural Ecuador where remote farmers often face threats and violence, which can stem from disputes over land, local crime, or drug trafficking. The brutal nature of this attack not only brings to light the individual tragedy of the Zamora family but also raises alarms regarding the safety of other rural families in the region who may share similar vulnerabilities against such acts of violence.
