Ramadan: Iftar on Zanzibar draws thousands to stadium
Thousands participated in a communal Iftar meal at Amani Stadium in Zanzibar, aiming to showcase unity and peace during Ramadan.
The recent Iftar event at the Amani Stadium in Zanzibar attracted thousands of participants, including both Muslims and non-Muslims, who came together to break their fast at sunset during Ramadan. This communal meal aimed not only to create a platform for breaking the fast but also to extend a message of peace, love, and unity, as highlighted by Arif Abbas Manji, the head of the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism. The event underscores Zanzibar's identity as a peaceful destination within the region.
Organizers set an ambitious target for the event, hoping to break records for the largest communal Iftar outside of Mecca and Medina. Arif Abbas Manji stated their goal was to surpass previous records, aiming to host up to 15,000 participants, which would mark a significant increase over the previous record of 7,000 attendees. This ambition showcases not only the cultural significance of Ramadan in Zanzibar but also the island's capacity to unite its diverse community in a shared experience.
With around 99 percent of Zanzibarβs population being Muslim, the Iftar event serves as a significant social and religious gathering, reinforcing communal bonds and promoting interfaith harmony. The gathering not only reflects the strong Muslim presence in Zanzibar but also illustrates how such events can foster a sense of unity and draw attention to the region's reputation as a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds during the holy month of Ramadan.
