Colombians residing in Esmeraldas vote in their country's legislative elections
Colombian voters in Esmeraldas participated in their home country's legislative elections at the Colombian consulate.
Colombian residents in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, began casting their votes early on a Sunday morning at the Colombian consulate for the legislative elections back home. Among the first to arrive was Alicia Restrepo in a taxi, followed shortly by Aurora Litardo in a pickup truck, and Sergio Santistevan, a local musician who drove a motorcycle. The turnout showed the active participation of the Colombian diaspora in Ecuador's electoral process.
Upon arrival, voters had to wait a few minutes while election officials verified that the voting process was ready to commence. The interior of the consulate was prepared for the events, with Margot Bastidas, a delegate from the consulate, and her team checking the electoral materials, ballot boxes, and voter registries before the polls opened. This careful preparation ensured that the voting would proceed smoothly for the Colombian citizens abroad.
A total of three ballot boxes were set up for the voters, reflecting the effort to accommodate the expected turnout. The involvement of Colombian expatriates in these legislative elections signifies their continued connection to their home country and highlights the importance of such democratic processes even outside national borders. In addition to fulfilling their civic duty, these residents are also contributing to the strengthening of electoral institutions through their participation in the democratic process.
