Call for Politics Focused on Environmental Protection and Human Rights
Rósa Björk Brynjólfsdóttir has been elected as the new leader of the Left-Green Movement, emphasizing the need for political action centered on environmental protection and human rights in Iceland.
Rósa Björk Brynjólfsdóttir has officially taken over as the new leader of Iceland's Left-Green Movement (Vinstri Grænna) after winning 95% of the votes during the party's national congress in Selfoss. She succeeds Svandís Svavarsdóttir, who led the party since October 2024. Rósa emphasized in her inaugural address the pressing need for political initiatives that prioritize environmental conservation and human rights, citing a declining commitment to these issues in the current Icelandic political landscape.
During her comments, Rósa criticized the recent shifts in the political stance of the Social Democratic Party (Samfylkingin), arguing that their alignment with the government has led to a rightward shift away from environmental concerns. She indicated that this change has resulted in diminished efforts to address ecological issues in policy-making. Rósa expressed determination to re-establish the Left-Green Movement as a significant force advocating for green politics and human rights, despite its previous setback in the last election, where the party failed to secure any seats in parliament.
Looking ahead, Rósa outlined the next significant task for the party, focusing on the upcoming local elections where the Left-Green Movement will be fielding candidates across multiple constituencies. She believes that these elections offer a vital opportunity for the party to rejuvenate and reconnect with voters, reiterating her commitment to lead with a focus on sustainability and human rights, ensuring that these crucial topics remain at the forefront of political discourse in Iceland.
