Last year, 'intimate men' killed 137 women

In South Korea, at least 137 women were murdered by male partners in intimate relationships over the past year, according to a recent report on domestic violence.

A report released by the Korean Women's Hotline coinciding with International Women's Day revealed that at least 137 women were killed by men with whom they had intimate relationships in the last year. Furthermore, approximately 252 additional women survived attempts on their lives. This alarming statistic indicates that a woman faced the risk of being murdered or actually was murdered approximately every 22.5 hours. The data emphasized broad victimization across all age groups, with young women in their 20s and 30s representing a significant portion of the victims, totaling nearly 40% of cases, suggesting a concerning trend in domestic violence.

The report analyzed media coverage of incidents between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year. It indicated a troubling reality where the number of women victims could be significantly higher when considering unreported cases. Alongside the direct victims, the report noted that the total number of individuals affected, including children, parents, and friends of the women, reached at least 673, highlighting the extensive impact of such violence within familial and social circles.

Among the motivations behind these crimes, revenge and debt accounted for the largest share at 29.6%, while incidents described as spontaneous arguments followed closely at 18.7%. The evidence illustrated that violence frequently occurred in domestic spaces, with 30.2% happening at victims' residences and 27.2% involving the victims' vehicles. The report unveiled disturbing patterns of how intimate partner violence is infiltrating daily life, such as perpetrators hiding in victims' homes under various guises, reflecting a deep-rooted issue that necessitates immediate attention and action from society and authorities alike.
