Number of women in Armed Forces of Ukraine has increased over 2025
The number of women serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine has significantly increased, with over 75,000 women currently involved in military service as of 2026.
As of 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine has seen a notable rise in the number of women serving, now totaling over 75,000, including more than 55,000 who are officially designated as servicewomen. This marks an increase of 7,000 female defenders compared to the previous year. The growth reflects a shift in military culture and recognition of women's roles in combat, especially against the backdrop of ongoing conflict with Russia.
In a statement to mark International Women's Day, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, praised the contributions of female soldiers in defending the nation against aggression. He highlighted that the perception of military service as predominantly a man's job has been challenged by the brave actions of these servicewomen, who are actively participating in combat to protect Ukraine's sovereignty.
Syrskyi also acknowledged the accomplishments of women in the Armed Forces over the past twelve years of conflict, noting that 1,705 female defenders have received state awards for their bravery, professionalism, and contributions to the military. Among these, five servicewomen have been honored with the title of Hero of Ukraine, three of whom were awarded posthumously, underscoring their sacrifices and commitment to Ukraine’s defense.
