Jung Cheong-rae: 'I will bet everything on victory in the local elections... the confusion in administrative integration is 200% the fault of the People's Power'

Jung Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party, emphasizes the importance of winning the upcoming local elections to counter opposing forces and improve government mechanisms.

On June 8, Jung Cheong-rae, the leader of South Korea's Democratic Party, held a press conference where he asserted that he would put everything on the line for victory in the upcoming local elections. He articulated the need to resolve internal turmoil and ensure that opposing forces during his administration are decisively judged. By emphasizing that the success of Lee Jae-myung's government hinges on the party's electoral success, he highlighted the urgency of securing a decisive win ahead of the June 3 local elections.

Jung criticized the opposition party, the People's Power, for creating confusion around administrative integration initiatives in regions such as Chungcheongnam-do, Daejeon, Daegu, and Gyeongbuk. He observed a shift in stance among the People’s Power on previously supported consolidation plans and warned that the party would face severe consequences in the upcoming local elections due to their contradictory positions. He underscored that 200% of the responsibility for the ensuing chaos lies with the People’s Power, implying that their erratic behavior would be punished at the polls.

The Democratic Party appears to be moving swiftly in preparations for the elections, aiming to finalize candidate nominations by April 20. Discussions within the party suggest that prospects for administrative integration in certain regions seem bleak but negotiations are still on the table until the parliamentary session on the 12th. Jung also urged for judicial accountability, specifically calling for the resignation of Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, emphasizing the perceived lack of judicial trust sparked by recent decisions under the current justice system.
