The slalom did not bring balm to Tormis Laine's empty soul
Estonian skier Tormis Laine struggles in the slalom event at the World Cup in Kranjska Gora, finishing outside the top 30 while expressing mental and physical fatigue.
In the ongoing FIS World Cup event in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, Estonian skier Tormis Laine failed to qualify for the second run of the slalom competition, finishing beyond the top 30. Laine expressed his feelings of exhaustion, stating that he is 'empty both mentally and physically' after a disappointing performance, which included a disqualification in the previous giant slalom.
Laine, considered Estonia's best alpine skier, faced significant challenges during the slalom event, starting his run as the 67th competitor among 72 participants. This meant he had to tackle a course that had already been worn and beaten down by many earlier runs, making it nearly impossible to achieve a competitive time. Despite these difficulties, Laine managed to finish the race, ultimately placing 49th, but he was still over three seconds behind the fastest time set by Atle Lie McGrath.
With two more World Cup events left in the season, Laine's struggles highlight the pressures and challenges faced by elite athletes. His admission of feeling depleted raises concerns about the mental and physical toll of competitive sports, especially in challenging conditions such as those experienced in Kranjska Gora. As he looks to continue his season, the need for recovery and mental resilience will be crucial for his performance going forward.
