OpenAI CEO: We Do Not Control the Pentagon's Use of Artificial Intelligence

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, stated he cannot control the Pentagon's use of the company's AI technologies, acknowledging criticism from his employees regarding operational decisions.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has admitted that he has no authority over how the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) utilizes the artificial intelligence technologies developed by his company. In a meeting with employees, he highlighted that OpenAI does not have the right to make operational decisions based on direct requests from the Pentagon. He noted the complex and contentious nature of military decisions, pointing out that opinions on specific actions, such as military strikes or interventions, are subjective and not OpenAI's to influence.

Despite the lack of control over operational decisions, Altman indicated that the Pentagon would allow OpenAI the necessary space to implement appropriate security measures. However, he clarified that the final operational decisions rest solely with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This division of responsibility has raised concerns regarding accountability and the ethical implications of AI technology in military applications, particularly as OpenAI has recently replaced Anthropic, a company that faced scrutiny from the previous administration.

Altman faced substantial public criticism from various employees during and following the meeting, reflecting a growing unease about the ethical ramifications of collaborating with military entities. The dialogue around OpenAI’s role and responsibilities in the landscape of artificial intelligence development and its integration into national defense continues to raise questions about the private sector's influence in military operations and the governance of AI technologies.
