Toxic compounds released into the air after explosions at Iranian oil warehouses

The US and Israel attacked oil infrastructure in Iran, resulting in multiple fatalities and environmental hazards due to released toxic compounds.

In the early hours of Sunday, the United States and Israel launched attacks on five oil infrastructure sites in and around Tehran, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, as reported by an Iranian official on state television. The Iranian National Oil Distribution Company’s CEO confirmed that enemy aircraft targeted multiple oil warehouses and a product transportation center, leading to casualties, including two tanker truck drivers, while the facilities sustained damage but the resulting fire was brought under control.

Following the explosions, the Iranian Red Crescent reported a significant release of toxic hydrocarbon compounds, as well as sulfur and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. This environmental incident has raised alarms, with the organization warning that any rain following these events could lead to dangerous acid rain, posing risks such as severe skin burns and serious lung damage for the local population. Such warnings highlight the potential health implications for those living in the vicinity of the explosions.

In light of the situation, Iranian environmental authorities have urged the public to take precautions. The incident underscores the ongoing tensions in the region, illustrating how military operations can have immediate and long-term environmental and health consequences, in addition to the geopolitical ramifications of such aggressive actions by the US and Israel against Iranian infrastructure.
