Do Women Decide? Egg Can 'Reject' Sperm Faster and 'Choose' Which One to Fertilize

Recent research suggests that human eggs play a more active role in the fertilization process than previously thought, potentially 'choosing' the sperm they fertilize.

For a long time, human fertilization was explained as a race, where millions of sperm compete to reach the egg, with the fastest being victorious. However, modern reproductive biology indicates that the process may be more complex. Contrary to previous beliefs that the egg merely waited for the sperm, recent studies reveal that the egg actively participates in its interaction with sperm. Published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, research conducted by scientists from Stockholm University in Sweden and the University of Manchester in the UK has shown that the follicular fluid surrounding the egg during ovulation releases chemical signals that can attract certain sperm more than others, suggesting that the egg may even 'choose' which sperm has the best chance of fertilizing it.
