The case of former Catholic priest Zviedris will continue in September

A court case regarding former Catholic priest Māris Zviedris, accused of money laundering, will continue on September 2, where the court will review the initial ruling and potential contradictions.

The Riga Regional Court is set to continue hearing the case of former Catholic priest Māris Zviedris on September 2, at 10 AM. The hearing will focus on the perspectives of the participants regarding any inconsistencies in the initial court ruling that fully acquitted him of charges related to money laundering in a large amount. Prosecutors are also expected to present their decision regarding changes and corrections to the charges being appealed.

The prosecution has brought charges against Zviedris concerning activities between 2015 and 2019, during which he deposited a total of €48,742 in cash into his bank accounts. It is alleged that he subsequently attempted to hide the criminal origin of these funds by combining them with money acquired legally, totaling €68,945, and transferring them to another account. Additionally, Zviedris reportedly took part in property auctions where he bought apartments, subsequently claiming back €29,560.

Prosecutors believe that the former priest converted property worth €39,384. The case highlights significant issues around financial misconduct within religious institutions, and its progression raises questions about accountability and transparency for clergy members. As such, the continued hearings are likely to attract public attention due to the implications of the allegations on both the individual and the institution he represented.
