Battery fire surprises residents in Espoo - people rescued from the roof

A battery fire in a garage in Espoo led to a significant rescue operation as residents escaped to the roof, with two people assisted down safely.

In the early hours, a battery fire erupted in the garage of a private house in Jupperi, Espoo, triggering a large-scale rescue effort. The West Uusimaa Rescue Department reported that the fire generated dense smoke, causing residents to flee to the roof for safety. Emergency services responded promptly, assisting two individuals off the roof and ensuring their well-being through medical checks after the incident.

The fire not only damaged the garage but also caused smoke damage throughout the lower levels of the home and the upper level. In total, 11 units from various rescue departments, including West Uusimaa, Central Uusimaa, and Helsinki, along with emergency medical services and police units, were deployed to manage the situation effectively. The incident underscores the dangers associated with lithium battery fires, as they can produce highly toxic smoke rapidly, necessitating swift evacuation from smoke-filled areas.

The rescue department's response highlights the importance of community preparedness for fire emergencies, particularly those involving batteries, which are increasingly common in households. Residents are advised to act quickly and evacuate dangerous situations while being aware of the potential risks from toxic smoke that can emerge from such incidents.
