Fraudsters tricked three residents of Vilnius and Klaipeda out of 45,500 euros

Three Lithuanian residents fell victim to fraudsters who impersonated various authorities and convinced them to transfer a total of 45,500 euros.

In a series of scams reported by the Lithuanian police, three residents from Vilnius and Klaipeda were deceived by individuals posing as telecom and bank employees as well as police officers. On March 6, a 70-year-old man from Vilnius reported that he received a phone call from Russian-speaking scammers claiming to be from a telecommunications company, resulting in the loss of 19,500 euros, which he handed over to a man who visited his home.

Later that evening, the same group of criminals, impersonating State Tax Inspection officials, managed to defraud a 79-year-old resident from Klaipeda out of 16,000 euros. Similarly, another victim, a 78-year-old woman from Vilnius, lost 10,000 euros to fraudsters who presented themselves as representatives of her electricity supplier and police officers. These scams reflect a growing trend of fraud targeting elderly individuals in Lithuania, often using savvy tactics to gain their trust.

The police have launched pre-trial investigations into these fraudulent activities as they seek to apprehend the culprits. Authorities are encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent further occurrences of such scams, particularly among vulnerable populations like the elderly.
