5.3 Earthquake in Thesprotia Shakes Epirus - Residents on Alert

A strong earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude struck Thesprotia, Greece, early in the morning, causing significant panic among residents in the Epirus region.

A powerful earthquake, registering 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred in Thesprotia, Greece, at 5:32 AM this morning, startling residents across the entire Epirus region. The epicenter of the quake was located 12 kilometers east of Leptokarya Thesprotia, with a focal depth of 12.9 kilometers, according to the Geodynamic Institute. The seismic shock was felt broadly throughout the area, leading to fears and unrest among the local population.

Experts are cautiously optimistic about the situation, as noted by seismologist Efthymios Lekkas during an interview with ERT. He mentioned that the relatively shallow depth of the quake and subsequent aftershocks measuring 4.7 and 3.4 are considered a "good sign," implying that further seismic activity may be moderate. Nonetheless, he advised caution around buildings that showed any signs of damage, recommending they not be used until they have been rigorously checked for safety.

In response to the earthquake, residents took to the streets in fear, leading to power outages in several areas, as reported by Efthymios Chrysochou, the Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection in Ioannina. The regional authorities, including the Regional Governor of Epirus, stated that they were closely monitoring the impact of the quake and any landslides on the Egnatia Road, which could pose risks to commuters and emergency response efforts in the aftermath of this natural event.
