Hungary refusing to return ‘war mafia’ cash to Ukraine (VIDEO)
Hungary has refused to return seized cash and gold to Ukraine, which it claims is linked to a ‘war mafia’ amid rising tensions between the two countries.
A Ukrainian state-owned bank has demanded that Hungary return tens of millions of dollars in cash and gold bars that were seized from an armored truck convoy, which Hungary claims may be associated with what it describes as a 'Ukraine war mafia.' This situation has exacerbated the already strained relations between Hungary and Ukraine, particularly regarding issues related to Russian oil, sanctions, and the treatment of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine.
The incident occurred earlier this week when Hungarian police stopped two armored vehicles that were said to be carrying approximately $80 million in cash and 9 kilograms of gold, under the suspicion of money laundering. Seven Ukrainian nationals who were traveling in these vehicles were detained for investigation but were later deported back to Ukraine. This event has significant implications for the ongoing discourse around international financial transactions related to the conflict and the complex interactions between neighboring states.
As Hungary positions itself amidst this dispute, it faces pressure from both Ukraine and its allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently issued a personal threat to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban regarding the conscription of ethnic Hungarians into the Ukrainian army, hinting at the growing geopolitical stakes in the region and why cooperation or conflict with Hungary over issues like this continues to be of pressing concern.
