Iraq: One killed in airstrike on Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters in Mosul and extension of airspace closure
One member of the Popular Mobilization Forces was killed in an airstrike targeting their military bases in northern Iraq.
Iraqi authorities announced that a member of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) was killed during airstrikes that hit military bases associated with them in northern Iraq. The government’s security media cell reported that unidentified aircraft struck the PMF's 40th Brigade around 18:10 local time. In addition to the casualty, three more were injured, and preliminary assessments indicated material losses due to the attacks. A source within the PMF suggested that the aircraft involved were likely American, indicating heightened tensions in the region.
The PMF, established in 2014 as a coalition of militias to combat ISIS, has since integrated into the Iraqi military structure. The recent airstrikes come amidst a backdrop of repeated attacks on PMF bases, especially following recent U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran. This reflects the complex dynamics and ongoing instability in Iraq, where local forces confront external influences directly impacting their operations and safety.
Amid these developments, the closure of Iraqi airspace has also been extended, indicating elevated security concerns. The situation in the Kurdish region of Iraq, specifically in Erbil, has also seen increased tension, with reports of drone strikes in the vicinity. This confluence of conflicts and military actions presents significant challenges for Iraq's sovereignty and the security of its domestic forces, highlighting the precarious situation on the ground that may lead to further escalation if not managed cautiously.
