Two men captured for stealing cables in a manhole in Quito
Two men were arrested in Quito for attempting to steal telecommunications cables from a manhole.
In the early hours of March 7, the Ecuadorian National Police arrested two men who were caught cutting telecom cables inside a manhole. The police responded to an alert from ECU911 and apprehended the suspects on Galo Plaza Lasso Avenue. A security guard had detained one of the suspects, who then informed the officers about the ongoing theft by himself and another individual still in the manhole.
As police approached the scene, the second suspect attempted to flee but was soon caught. Jorge L., aged 30, admitted to entering the area to commit theft, highlighting a persistent issue in Ecuador regarding the theft of infrastructure materials that hinder services. The police intervention not only prevented further theft but also underscored the importance of community vigilance in combating such crimes.
This incident reflects broader concerns about public safety and the impact of crime on urban infrastructure in Quito. With telecommunications theft becoming increasingly common, it raises questions about the adequacy of protective measures for utilities and the responsibility of local authorities in ensuring security. The cooperation between law enforcement and security personnel is crucial in addressing these issues and improving community safety.
