GM of Piracicaba rescues a maned wolf hit by a car on the highway
A maned wolf was rescued by the Municipal Guard of Piracicaba after being hit by a car on a highway in Brazil, where it was found alive but in critical condition.
On Saturday, a maned wolf was rescued after being hit by a vehicle on the Fausto Santo Mauro Highway (SP-127) near Rio Claro, SΓ£o Paulo. The Municipal Guard of Piracicaba received an emergency call and dispatched teams to the area immediately after the toll plaza. Upon arrival, rescuers found the animal alive but suffering from severe injuries, including a broken front leg and a head wound, lying by the roadside.
Veterinarians and a representative from the toll operator, Colinas, provided initial first aid at the scene. Due to the condition of the wolf, improvised splints made from cardboard and adhesive tape were used to stabilize its injured leg before more advanced care was available. The assessment indicated critical injuries requiring urgent veterinary attention, highlighting the importance of wildlife rescue operations in areas where animals like the maned wolf are often at risk from vehicle collisions.
Eventually, a veterinarian from the Mata Ciliar Association arrived at the scene with appropriate equipment for the proper handling of the injured wild animal. This incident underscores the ongoing conflict between wildlife habitats and urban development, emphasizing the need for protective measures to enhance the survival of species like the maned wolf, which is especially vulnerable in traffic-heavy areas in Brazil.
