Goalkeeper mistake helps FCK to second consecutive cup final
FC Copenhagen secures a place in the Danish Cup final after defeating Viborg 2-1, thanks to a significant goalkeeper error by Viborg.
FC Copenhagen (FCK) experienced much-needed success in the cup tournament on Saturday after a disastrous form in the Superliga, where the defending champions are set to play in the relegation round after failing to make the top six. In the semi-final second leg against Viborg, FCK completed their work with a 2-1 victory, mirroring the score from the first match, thus achieving a total aggregate score of 4-2, solidifying their place in the second consecutive cup final. Last year, the club won the cup title after defeating Silkeborg in the final.
The opponent in the final on Ascension Day, May 14, will either be FC Midtjylland or AGF, who meet in the other semi-final on Sunday. FC Midtjylland secured a 1-0 win in the first leg. Despite Viborg performing better in the first half, a glaring goalkeeping error from Viborg's Lucas Lund allowed FCK to capitalize on the mistake, making it significantly more difficult for Viborg to overcome the deficit in the quest for a place in the cup final, which they had not reached in 26 years.
FCK played without their usual first-choice goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski, with Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson stepping in for only his second match for the club. The victory is a vital boost for FCK as they look to shift their focus from a disappointing league campaign to cup success, underscoring the importance of the Danish Cup in providing a chance for redemption for the club this season.
