Motorcyclists are involved in the majority of accidents in Northern Minas, says Samu report
Samu's report reveals that motorcyclists are implicated in most traffic accidents in Northern Minas, with over 17,000 recorded incidents in the last two years.
The Intermunicipal Consortium of Health of the Urgency Network of Northern Minas (Cisrun/Samu Macro Norte) has reported over 17,000 traffic accidents in the region over the past two years. In 2024, there were 8,408 recorded incidents, which slightly increased to 8,713 in 2025. The report, conducted by G1, indicates that a significant majority of these accidents involved motorcyclists, totaling 10,061 incidents within the two-year span.
In Montes Claros, the largest city in Northern Minas, accidents were particularly prevalent, with 3,224 occurrences in 2024 and an increase to 3,385 in 2025. The report includes a month-by-month breakdown of accident statistics for the year 2025 in Montes Claros, highlighting a disturbing trend in accidents involving motorcycles. For example, motorcycle accidents peaked in June with 223 incidents, while car accidents remained notably lower throughout the year.
The findings raise concerns about road safety in the region, particularly the high involvement of motorcyclists in traffic accidents. These statistics are critical for local authorities and health services to address the alarming trend and implement measures aimed at reducing motorcycle-related accidents, enhancing road safety education, and potentially re-evaluating road infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of motorcyclists in Northern Minas.
