Fines for Double Parking Soar in São Paulo
Between 2024 and 2025, the number of violations related to double parking in São Paulo increased by 90.7%.
Between 2024 and 2025, São Paulo saw a staggering 90.7% increase in the number of violations associated with double parking. This type of infraction is particularly prevalent near schools and commercial areas, contributing to traffic congestion in these zones. Experts point out that such parking practices not only hinder individual traffic flow but also negatively impact public transportation, leading to delays and increased social costs for the city, such as wasted time and fuel consumption.
Flamínio Fichmann, an architect specializing in mobility, explains that in São Paulo, where many roads have three lanes, a vehicle that double parks effectively occupies two-thirds of the roadway. This blockage exacerbates congestion, regardless of the number of lanes available, and highlights the need for better regulatory measures to address the issue. Fichmann argues that initiatives from the city's Traffic Engineering Company (CET) are crucial in reducing double parking and its associated traffic woes.
The widespread practice of double parking raises questions about urban mobility and the management of limited road space. As the city grapples with increasing vehicle density, solutions that combine public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement mechanisms become essential to alleviate congestion and promote a more efficient transportation system in São Paulo.
