Ariel Aisiks, an Argentine entrepreneur who trained at the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, identified a significant gap in the representation and study of Latin American art while studying art in New York. Observing his classmates' surprising lack of access to authentic materials about Latin American artistic movements, particularly Mexican muralism, he realized the potential for a dedicated platform to bridge this knowledge divide. This inspiration led him to establish the Instituto para Estudios sobre Arte Latinoamericano (Islaa) in 2011, which focuses on fostering exhibitions and academic studies of Latin American art in Manhattan.

The Islaa serves a unique purpose, distancing itself from the conventional functions of galleries or museums. According to Aisiks, the institute is designed to be the necessary space for Latin American art to be studied, archived, and circulated, thus enhancing its global visibility.
