Harsh statistics on the most common cancer among women: These symptoms are not recognized by everyone as breast cancer

A study reveals that while Finnish women are generally aware of breast cancer symptoms, many fail to recognize some of the more subtle signs of the disease.

In Finland, breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women, with approximately 14 new diagnoses made each day, according to Docrates Mehiläinen Cancer Hospital. Awareness of classic breast cancer symptoms is high; for instance, 95% of women can identify a lump in the breast as a potential indicator of the disease. Women also show significant awareness regarding other symptoms, such as lumps in the armpits, changes in breast shape, and discharge from the nipple, which can all indicate breast cancer.

However, the study highlighted that less common symptoms receive less recognition. For instance, only about one-third of women are aware that back pain or unexplained fatigue could be associated with breast cancer. Similarly, just half of the respondents recognized itching or tingling sensations in the breast as potential signs of the disease. This gap in symptom recognition suggests a need for increased educational efforts to ensure women understand the full range of symptoms associated with breast cancer.

The study indicates that middle-aged women, particularly those aged 45 to 54, tend to identify breast cancer symptoms more accurately compared to other age groups. This finding emphasizes the importance of targeted awareness campaigns aimed at this demographic to enhance early detection of breast cancer, which is crucial for improving treatment outcomes and survival rates across the population.
