The Prosecutor's Office Prepares to Transfer the Case of Alytus District Mayor J. Vitkauskienė's 'Check' Case to Court

Alytus District Mayor J. Vitkauskienė is facing charges of fraud and document forgery as the prosecutor's office prepares to take the case to court next week.

The investigation into Alytus District Mayor J. Vitkauskienė has reportedly gathered sufficient evidence to proceed to trial, with the Office of the Prosecutor indicating that the indictment is currently being drafted. Darius Valkavičius, the prosecutor overseeing the case from the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed that two private individuals have also been implicated but their details remain confidential. The case revolves around allegations of fraud, abuse of power, and forgery of documents related to false claims of expenses incurred for council member activities.

According to Valkavičius, the length of the investigation was partly due to the necessity for expert opinions to validate the claims made against the mayor. It is alleged that during her tenure as a council member from 2019 to 2023, Mayor Vitkauskienė provided misleading information about expenses supposedly incurred, which has raised significant legal and ethical questions about her conduct while in office. This case has not only implications for her political future but also casts a critical light on the governance practices in Alytus.

This development comes at a time when scrutiny of local government officials is intensifying in Lithuania, amidst broader discussions about corruption and accountability in public office. The upcoming trial is expected to attract considerable media attention, and its outcome could influence public trust in local governance in Alytus and beyond.
