Demand for 'Thorough Compensation for Victims' from the Liquidators of the Former Unification Church - Statement from the National Federation of Bar Associations

The National Federation of Bar Associations called for comprehensive compensation for victims of the former Unification Church during a gathering in Tokyo following the start of liquidation proceedings for the organization.

On November 7, the National Federation of Bar Associations, responsible for addressing issues related to the former Unification Church, held a meeting in Tokyo to voice their demands regarding the liquidation procedures. The confederation emphasized that the essence of the liquidation process should focus on victim relief and demanded thorough compensation for all victims, including potential future victims who may leave the cult. This statement follows the initiation of the church's liquidation process as ordered by the Tokyo District Court.

After the meeting, a press conference was held by the federation's secretary-general, attorney Ryuichi Kimura, who expressed the urgency to meet with the appointed liquidator. Kimura indicated a desire to provide necessary information that would guide the policies of the liquidation. He aimed to highlight the circumstances and issues pertaining to the church and the profiles of the victims to advocate for their rights and compensation effectively.

A notable development occurred on November 4 when the Tokyo High Court dismissed an appeal by the church against a previous ruling from the Tokyo District Court that ordered its dissolution. This ruling confirms that the liquidation proceedings have begun, and the liquidator, attorney Naohiro Ito, was appointed and reported to have engaged with former church president Masakazu Hori. Registry records confirm the dissolution order's effectiveness as of November 4 and the appointment of the liquidator, marking a significant step in addressing the grievances of victims.
