Transitioning to search for presumed dead in avalanche in Narvik โ€“ still not sending in ground crews

Rescue operations in Narvik have shifted focus to searching for a presumed deceased individual after an avalanche, as conditions remain unsafe for ground teams.

Rescue efforts in Narvik, Norway, have transitioned from searching for a missing person to seeking the presumed deceased after a recent avalanche in the Beisfjord area. The local police operations chief, Thomas Jarnรฆs Coe, stated that, due to the unstable conditions and high risk of further avalanches, it is currently unsafe to deploy ground crews. The avalanche occurred in the Helligvatnet region, characterized by an extremely hazardous environment with significant snowmass pressing down on the ice.

A French citizen remains unaccounted for following the incident that took place on Friday afternoon. Given the severity of the situation, aerial teams equipped with avalanche expertise have conducted overflights of the affected area to assess the conditions. The avalanche measured over 200 meters in width and posed continuous threats with large ice cliffs and the possibility of additional sliding. Authorities are particularly concerned, as the area has been classified with a risk level of 4, indicating significant danger.

Local authorities emphasize safety for rescue personnel and urge the public to remain aware of the avalanche risks in the area. With search operations adapting to these precarious conditions, the focus will now entirely shift towards recovery efforts, hoping to conclude the search with respect for both the missing and the safety of rescuers.
