Ukraine has achieved a remarkable victory by winning its first gold medal at the 2026 Paralympic Games, which are being held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Taras Rad, a 26-year-old Ukrainian athlete, triumphed in the men's 7.5km sprint sitting event, showcasing his extraordinary skills in the sport. Rad managed to shoot clean at both shooting stages and completed the race with the fastest time, clinching the gold medal position in a highly competitive field that included top athletes from China.
In this event, Rad faced strong competition from Chinese athletes Mengtao Liu and Zixu Liu, who also demonstrated impressive performance by shooting clean. However, Rad's speed on the course was unmatched, allowing him to finish with a time of 19:55.5, ahead of Liu and Liu, who took the silver and bronze medals, respectively. The performance highlights not only Rad's individual talent but also the growing prowess of Ukrainian athletes in the international sports arena, particularly in adaptive sports.
Beyond Rad's success, other Ukrainian competitors also participated strongly, with Vasyl Kravchuk finishing fourth and Oleksandr Aleksyk making it to the top ten. This victory for Ukraine not only represents a personal achievement for Rad but also serves as a source of pride for the nation, as it reflects its commitment to promoting sports and inclusivity for individuals with disabilities on an international stage like the Paralympics.
