A group of over 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the UK is advocating for an urgent meeting with the CEO of Travelodge, Jo Boydell, due to serious concerns raised by a recent sexual assault case at the Maidenhead branch of the hotel chain. The incident involved Kyran Smith, a 29-year-old man who was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman after hotel staff erroneously provided him with her room number and a key card. This lapse in security has prompted MPs to question the hotel’s protocols regarding guest privacy and safety.

Smith's attack occurred after a party in December 2022, and he was subsequently sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison. His successful deceit in obtaining the victim's information by falsely claiming to be her boyfriend has highlighted severe deficiencies in Travelodge's operational standards. Following the incident, the hotel offered the victim a mere £30 refund, which was described as insulting by the MPs and has fueled further outrage regarding the company’s handling of the situation.

The call for accountability from the MPs comes at a critical time when concerns about hotel safety and the treatment of victims of sexual assault are increasingly under scrutiny. The meeting with Boydell is an attempt to examine the security measures currently in place at Travelodge and to ensure that guests are safeguarded against potential harm in the future, sparking broader discussions about industry standards for protecting vulnerable individuals in hospitality environments.
