A dance group in Itapetininga, Brazil, provides self-esteem, health benefits, and support for women over 60.
In Itapetininga, São Paulo, a group of women aged over 60 has formed a dance group that not only promotes physical health but also fosters self-esteem and a support network among participants. Celebrating International Women's Day, discussions with two group members and their instructor highlighted their collective growth and the joy of dancing together. The initiative has become a source of empowerment for its members, proving the importance of community engagement for older women.
The group was established to represent Itapetininga in the Jogos da Melhor Idade (Games for the Elderly) and has been a significant part of the local sporting landscape since its inception. Under the leadership of physical education teacher Vivian Cibele Monti, the team trained rigorously since 2017 in preparation for its first competition. The unique aspect of this initiative is its exclusivity to women over 60, aligning with the competition's regulations, thus creating a space dedicated to this demographic.
The initiative not only aims for athletic success, evidenced by their gold medal win but also enhances the participants' quality of life. It highlights the broader significance of such groups in promoting healthy lifestyles, camaraderie, and connection among older women, showcasing the role of sports and fitness in enriching lives and bolstering community spirit.
