The “Sea of Plastic” in Spain that Surprises NASA: a gigantic agricultural landscape visible from space like the Great Wall of China
NASA has revealed images of a vast agricultural area in southern Spain known as the 'Sea of Plastic', which can be seen from space and resembles the Great Wall of China in its visibility.
For decades, it was believed that the Great Wall of China could be seen from space with the naked eye, or that the pyramids of Egypt held that privileged view. However, images captured from Earth's orbit show a different reality. What truly stands out from hundreds of kilometers above is not an ancient monument but an enormous agricultural infrastructure located in southern Spain.
This agricultural landscape, known as the 'Sea of Plastic', is a vast concentration of greenhouses situated in the municipality of El Ejido in the province of Almería. Covering more than 40,000 hectares, equivalent to about 380 square kilometers, the area is dedicated to intensive farming. From above, the surface appears as a massive white expanse that starkly contrasts with the arid surroundings of the region, leaving an astonishing visual impact.
NASA's images clearly show this characteristic brightness of the landscape. This effect is not merely due to the size of each greenhouse individually but is the result of a combination of thousands of plastic coverings that create a reflective surface. The phenomenon highlights the significant agricultural practices in the region, which serves as a crucial source of produce for much of Europe and raises questions regarding sustainability and environmental impact in large-scale agricultural operations.
