Laborers lowered into a tank without a safety tank, 3 died from toxic gas, all were from Bihar
Three laborers died from toxic gas inhalation while cleaning a chemical tank in Surat, India, raising serious safety concerns regarding workplace conditions.
A tragic incident occurred in the Pandesara GIDC area of Surat city during the Holi festival when three laborers lost their lives while cleaning a chemical tank at Paras Print Private Limited textile mill. Reports indicate that these laborers were not provided with any safety equipment as they were lowered into the tank for cleaning during a two-day holiday offered by the mill management for the festival. The cleaning took place on Thursday evening when many were celebrating Holi, highlighting the concerning negligence in safety practices.
Witnesses noted that one after another, the laborers were sent into the tank, which was filled with chemical-laden water. Initially, Sonu Kumar was the first to enter the tank, and soon after, it was reported that he and other workers lost consciousness due to the inhalation of toxic gases. Unfortunately, the lack of adequate safety measures transformed what should have been a routine cleaning task into a horrific disaster, resulting in the three fatalities and one serious injury among the workers present.
This incident raises significant concerns about the safety protocols at workplaces in India, especially in the textile industry. The fact that workers were asked to perform hazardous tasks without proper safety gear not only violates labor rights but also showcases a dire need for stricter enforcement of workplace safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. As investigations unfold, there will likely be calls for accountability and changes in the way labor is managed in high-risk environments like textile mills.
