Latvia's mixed wheelchair curling team stumbles in the first end, loses in the start of the Paralympic tournament

Latvia's mixed wheelchair curling team faced a tough loss against South Korea in their opening match of the Paralympic tournament after falling behind early.

In their debut at the Paralympic tournament, Latvia's mixed wheelchair curling team, which includes newcomers Elija Asniņa, Linda Meijere, and Adelaida Killiane, alongside veterans Ojārs Briedis and Sergejs Djačenko, struggled against a strong South Korean team. In the first end, Briedis made an excellent throw, but the South Koreans managed to escape a difficult situation by knocking away a well-placed stone, despite the guards on the board. The end concluded with South Korea establishing a dominant 5:0 lead by executing several precise shots.

In the second end, Djačenko had a chance to score for Latvia with the final throw, but by just a few centimeters, the South Korean stone remained closer to the house center. Following the measurement, the end resulted in a score of 1:0 in favor of South Korea, extending their lead to 6:0 overall. Despite the mounting pressure, Latvia managed to score their first point in the third end, which reduced the deficit to 1:6, although Djačenko missed an opportunity to secure another point with the last stone, leaving Hungary with missed chances while the match remained tense.

The match not only highlights the pressure that comes with high-stakes competitions like the Paralympics but also demonstrates the growth and learning curve for the Latvian team, including the need to convert crucial scoring opportunities into points. While they faced tough opponents in their opening match, the experience gained will be vital as they continue to compete in the tournament.
