Higher traffic fines in the City: increased by 18%, with common violations now costing nearly $100,000

Traffic fines in Buenos Aires have increased by 18.9% due to a hike in the fixed unit value, with the most common violations now costing nearly $100,000.

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, traffic fines have seen a significant increase, with the latest adjustment raising fines by 18.9%, effective from Tuesday. This increase is linked to the rise in the fixed unit value (UF), which is determined by the average cost of half a liter of premium gasoline in the city. The current value of the UF has risen from $798.51 to $949.99, reflecting the fact that gasoline prices have surged beyond the inflation rate recorded between September and February, which stood at 15.5% according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec).

Parking violations are among the most frequent offenses committed by drivers in the city, with illegal parking and speeding accounting for about 80% of infractions. The penalty for improper parking has now increased to an alarming $94,999. Additionally, drivers who obstruct wheelchair ramps face fines of $284,819, while those parking in exclusive lanes for the Metrobus service incur even steeper penalties. This adjustment not only underscores the rising cost of living in Buenos Aires but also highlights the city's efforts to curb violations by introducing tougher penalties.

The rise in traffic fines has sparked discussions among residents and drivers regarding the fairness and effectiveness of such measures in promoting safe driving behaviors. Many argue that the fines are disproportionate to the infractions, especially considering the economic struggles many citizens face. However, the city government justifies these increases as necessary to improve road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations, effectively making the streets safer for all citizens or providing a revenue boost for the local government amidst rising economic pressures.
