Nitish Kumar Emerges as the Poorest Candidate in Rajya Sabha, Possessing Only This Much Wealth

Former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has the lowest declared assets among Rajya Sabha candidates, totaling ₹1.66 crores.

In the recent filing of asset declarations by candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections, former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has emerged as the candidate with the least amount of wealth. His total declared assets amount to ₹1.66 crores, reflecting a significant decrease in his net worth, which was recorded at only ₹7.87 lakhs in 2025. This raises questions regarding the financial standings of political leaders, especially given Kumar's long-standing presence in Indian politics.

Kumar's asset declaration reveals he has cash reserves of just ₹20,552 and liquid assets valued at ₹17.91 lakhs. Notably, the only pieces of jewelry he possesses include a ring made of 20 grams of gold and a pearl-studded silver ring, together valued at approximately ₹2.37 lakhs. Additionally, he owns a Ford EcoSport vehicle, purchased for ₹11.32 lakhs in 2015. This modest declaration stands out in a political landscape often criticized for corruption and wealth accumulation.

Furthermore, Kumar owns an immovable asset, a flat in Dwarka, Delhi, which he acquired in 2004 for ₹13.78 lakhs. Presently, the flat is valued at around ₹1.48 crores. Despite his political stature, his financial declaration could be perceived as a deliberate political statement to emphasize anti-corruption or simplicity among politicians. However, it also puts him in an interesting position as he competes against candidates with significantly higher nett worths, potentially influencing the public and political narrative surrounding wealth in Indian politics.
