Taiwanese fans fill 40,000 seats at Tokyo Dome... Taiwan beats Czech Republic for first win in WBC

Taiwanese fans filled the Tokyo Dome to support their national baseball team, which secured its first win in the World Baseball Classic against the Czech Republic.

On the morning of March 7, the area around Tokyo Dome was packed with Taiwanese fans who had come to cheer on their national baseball team in a World Baseball Classic (WBC) group match against the Czech Republic. This level of enthusiasm reflects the growing expectations for Taiwanese baseball following their victory in the 2024 Premier12 tournament, propelling the fans to fill the stadium with over 40,000 attendees. Such a turnout for a game not involving the Japanese national team is rare, considering that only 19,920 people attended the Korea-Czech match and 21,514 for the Australia-Czech match.

After disappointing performances against Australia and Japan, where Taiwan suffered heavy losses, they bounced back with a decisive 14-0 win against the Czech Republic, ending the game in the seventh inning due to a mercy rule. The team's offense significantly improved, tallying 11 hits compared to just four in their previous two games. This victory sets the stage for their crucial upcoming match against South Korea, where a win is essential for advancing to the quarter-finals, contingent upon other match outcomes.

Meanwhile, in other WBC action, pre-tournament favorites, the United States, defeated Brazil 15-5, while Mexico claimed its first win by beating Great Britain 8-2. Group A saw Puerto Rico overpower Colombia 5-0, and Cuba secured a win against Panama 3-1. In Group D, the Dominican Republic outplayed Nicaragua with a score of 12-3. Only the top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals of the WBC.
