East of the DRC: the army announces the discovery of a significant cache of weapons in Ituri

The Congolese army has discovered a significant cache of weapons in the Ituri province, believed to belong to a militia associated with a former warlord.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the army has reported the discovery of a substantial cache of weapons in Ituri province. Located in a mining site in Noro, the cache included numerous crates of ammunition, AK-47 assault rifles, and grenades. According to the military spokesperson for Ituri, these weapons are linked to the militia of Thomas Lubanga, a former warlord who was convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and has returned to the area over the past year.

The spokesperson, Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, stated that this arsenal was concealed in a mining area and is associated with the Convention for Popular Revolution (CRP), a militia formed a year ago by Lubanga's supporters. This development highlights ongoing concerns regarding the presence of armed groups in eastern DRC, which have been a persistent factor of instability in the region and continue to pose significant challenges to the Congolese government and international community.

The return of Lubanga to the region raises questions about the resurgence of militia activity and potential violence in Ituri. Given the historical context of the DRC’s struggles with war and armed conflict, the arms discovery could lead to heightened military presence in the area as the government seeks to restore order and prevent further escalation of conflict. This incident is a reminder of the fragile security situation in the DRC, particularly in regions plagued by armed groups and mining conflicts.
