Ryanair passengers told to take cardboard boxes on flights
Ryanair has informed passengers to include a piece of cardboard in their hand luggage to help manage the new, larger personal bag dimensions allowed by the airline.
Ryanair has updated its carry-on baggage policy, increasing the allowed size of personal bags by 20% following EU regulations. Effective September 2025, passengers traveling on a basic fare will be able to bring a personal bag measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm without facing extra fees. The new regulations may encourage passengers to maximize their packing, which could lead to unintended costs associated with overpacking.
Packing expert Tom Schott of Schott Packaging has issued a warning to travelers. Despite the new dimensions presenting an opportunity for better packing, Schott emphasizes the importance of being strategic when utilizing this increased allowance. Simply cramming more items into larger bags could lead to difficulties at the airport, including the potential for excess baggage fees, if the overall weight exceeds the 10kg limit and doesn't fit under the seat as required.
This change represents a significant shift in Ryanair's baggage policy, a response to regulatory changes intended to enhance passenger convenience. Traveling with larger personal bags could streamline the boarding process, but it also requires travelers to remain vigilant about packing efficiently to avoid penalties. The advice to include a cardboard piece in hand luggage underscores the airline's intention to encourage responsible packing habits among passengers.
