'Get medical help' if you can't hear sounds like rain or leaves
A new survey reveals that nearly half of individuals struggle to hear common sounds, prompting experts to recommend online hearing checks.
A recent survey conducted by RNID, a charity dedicated to supporting the deaf and those with hearing loss or tinnitus, highlights significant difficulties faced by the general population in detecting common sounds. The survey, which involved 1,810 participants who had never been diagnosed with hearing loss, found that nearly half of respondents struggled to hear sounds such as leaves rustling (47%) and rainfall (43%). These alarming statistics suggest that many may have an undiagnosed hearing condition.
Experts urge individuals to prioritize their hearing health, particularly those who may not be aware of their potential hearing issues. The survey results revealed that 46% of participants had difficulty hearing someone shout their name from another room, and about 42% reported challenges in detecting cyclists ringing their bells. Such difficulties are not merely minor inconveniences; they may indicate an underlying condition that warrants further investigation and professional evaluation.
To address these concerns, RNID has called on the public to participate in their free online hearing check to better understand and address their hearing health. The charity emphasizes that early detection is key in managing hearing loss and improving quality of life, encouraging those who notice these challenges to seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
