The arrests of two defendants for collective rape in Copacabana are upheld

The Brazilian justice system upheld the arrests of two young men accused of participating in the collective rape of a 17-year-old girl in Copacabana.

The court in Rio de Janeiro has upheld the detention of Bruno Felipe dos Santos Allegretti and Vitor Hugo Oliveira Simonin, both 18 years old, in connection with the collective rape of a 17-year-old girl in the Copacabana area. During a custody hearing on September 6, the judge assessed the legality of their detention, deciding they should remain in custody pending further proceedings. This case has also involved two other suspects who were arrested earlier and, like the two present defendants, opted to remain silent during police questioning and will only provide statements in court.

On September 5, the two additional suspects, Mattheus Verissimo Zoel Martins and João Gabriel Xavier Bertho—both 19 years old—had their detention confirmed by the court. Following their apprehension, all four young men were taken to the José Frederico Marques Public Jail in Benfica, where they will await further legal proceedings. The lack of mobile phones during their arrest prompted the Civil Police to request phone records from the suspects in order to gather more evidence regarding the case.

This incident has raised significant concerns regarding sexual violence, especially involving minors, in Brazil, highlighting the urgent need for greater legal protection for victims and a call for societal change. The decision to uphold the arrests serves as a step in addressing such heinous crimes, but this case is also indicative of ongoing issues of justice system inadequacies and the continuing prevalence of violence against women and girls in the country.
