Delayed treatment – woman died from septic shock

A woman died from septic shock after delays in her treatment at Skånes universitetssjukhus in Malmö, prompting a report to health authorities.

In April 2025, a woman in her 45s was admitted to Skånes universitetssjukhus in Malmö due to a fever and exhibited high-risk symptoms indicating serious illness on assessment tools used by medical staff. Initially, the medical team did not immediately recognize the possibility of sepsis, which is a critical condition that can escalate dangerously if not treated swiftly. It was only after her blood pressure fell that sepsis was suspected, leading to a delay in administering necessary antibiotics.

Approximately seven hours post-admission, the first dose of antibiotics was finally given, unfortunately, by that time, the woman had already entered septic shock, a life-threatening condition. The deteriorating health led to her passing away later that evening, highlighting critical gaps in the medical response to her condition at the hospital.

The incident has raised alarm over the quality of care provided, leading Region Skåne to report the case to the Inspektionen för vård och omsorg (Ivo) under the lex Maria framework, which allows for the investigation of serious care injuries. This report is a significant step in evaluating the accountability and standards of medical practices at the hospital, indicating that further scrutiny and possible reforms may be necessary to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
