After reports of an assassination attempt... Did Turkey request British protection for al-Shara?
Reports indicate that Turkey may have requested British intelligence's help in protecting Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara amidst concerns of assassination attempts.
Following reports of plots to assassinate Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, the Turkish Communications Directorate's Disinformation Combat Center has denied claims that Turkey has requested increased British protection for al-Shara from MI6. The statement made by the Turkey's center emphasized that a foreign news agency's report did not accurately reflect the situation. It also stated that Turkeyβs National Intelligence Organization maintains active cooperation in combating terrorism with international intelligence agencies and security entities in Syria.
Conversely, five sources familiar with the matter, including both Syrian and foreign officials, informed Reuters that the Turkish intelligence had indeed approached MI6 last month to enhance its protective efforts for al-Shara due to growing concerns over recent assassination attempts. Reports suggest that ISIS may have developed plans targeting al-Shara, prompting Turkish officials to seek additional protective measures from their British counterparts.
This situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, particularly as it relates to Syria's ongoing conflicts. Turkey's engagement and the need for protective arrangements highlight the vulnerabilities faced by officials within Syria amid threats from terrorist organizations. It also showcases the intricate relations between Turkey and the UK regarding regional security and intelligence collaboration.
