São José do Egito is recognized as 'Pernambuco's Capital of Poetry'
São José do Egito has been honored with the title 'Pernambuco's Capital of Poetry' for its historical significance in preserving and promoting folk poetry.
The Legislative Assembly of Pernambuco (Alepe) awarded the honorary title of 'Pernambuco's Capital of Poetry' to the municipality of São José do Egito, located in the Sertão region. This recognition acknowledges the city's historical importance in preserving and disseminating popular poetry, which has fostered generations of poets and repentistas—traditional improvisational singers—who uphold the oral poetry tradition. The awarding ceremony took place on February 23, and was proposed by Deputy Gustavo Gouveia, bringing together lawmakers, authorities, poets, and cultural figures.
São José do Egito, known nationally as the 'Land of Poetry,' has shaped its cultural identity through viola singing, repentism, and popular literature. Poetry is deeply woven into the everyday lives of its residents, reflected in the local monuments, public spaces, and cultural events. One notable site is the Beco de Laura, located within the historic center, adorned with over 50 verses from various poets, highlighting the town's rich literary heritage.
The designation as 'Capital of Poetry' is not merely a title but a celebration of the city's vibrant culture and artistic expression. It serves to enhance São José do Egito's visibility on the national stage, potentially attracting tourism and fostering pride among local residents. This honor reinforces the significance of oral tradition in Brazilian culture and encourages ongoing support for artistic endeavors in the region.
