Trump allows the sale of Venezuelan gold to the US... but prohibits it to Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba

The US government issued a license allowing transactions with Venezuela's state-run gold mining company, Minerven, while prohibiting such dealings with several other countries.

On March 6, the United States government issued a new license enabling American companies to engage in transactions with Minerven, Venezuela's state gold mining corporation. This action reflects the ongoing strategy of the Trump administration to exert greater control over Venezuela's natural resources and reflects a somewhat paradoxical approach to international relations and sanctions. The license comes amid growing tensions and attempts to diminish the influence of Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba in the region, specifically concerning the Venezuelan resource landscape.

The decision followed a meeting between US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez, along with representatives from more than two dozen American mining and mineral companies, most of which had previously operated in Venezuela but suspended activities due to political instability and security concerns. Burgum indicated that the Venezuelan government had provided security guarantees to attract potential investments in the country, which has seen its mineral-rich areas controlled by various illegal groups and armed guerrillas.

This license, termed General License 51, permits US businesses to buy, transport, and resell Venezuelan gold, potentially revitalizing America's economic interest in Venezuelan resources while drawing a clear line against countries that the US government considers adversaries. The implications of this move could be significant for both US-Venezuela relations, and the broader geopolitical dynamics in Latin America, especially as it relates to how competition for natural resources can be influenced by international alliances and rivalries.
