Bogotá judge sentences one of the responsible for the assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay to 21 years

A Bogotá judge sentenced Carlos Eduardo Mora to 21 years in prison for his role in the assassination of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was gravely injured in an attack and died shortly after.

A Bogotá penal judge convicted Carlos Eduardo Mora, known as Veneco, to 21 years in prison for his involvement in the assassination of senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay. The senator was fatally injured in an attack on August 11 and died two months later. According to the General Prosecutor's Office, Mora played a crucial role in organizing the logistics of the attack and provided the vehicle used in the crime, which transported the firearm to a minor who ultimately fired at Uribe.

In addition to being sentenced for aggravated homicide, Mora was also convicted for aggravated conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms. He is currently incarcerated in a Bogotá prison, and this sentence reflects the ongoing efforts to hold those responsible for political violence in Colombia accountable. The case has garnered significant attention, as it highlights the dangers faced by politicians in the country, particularly those opposing powerful drug trafficking and organized crime factions.

So far, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with this case, including the minor who fired the weapon. The minor was previously sanctioned with seven years of detention, emphasizing the serious nature of the crime and the extensive network behind the assassination attempt. This incident raises broader concerns about the climate of violence and insecurity impacting Colombia’s political landscape, as well as the challenges of ensuring justice in such high-profile cases.
