A Woman Leads the Largest Palestinian Municipalities.. What Does She Say About Her Experience?
A Palestinian woman has taken on a historic leadership role in the Hebron municipality amidst complex geopolitical challenges.
In a groundbreaking development, Dr. Asmaa Al-Sharabati, a Palestinian professor in her forties, has emerged as the head of the Hebron municipality, the largest city in Palestine. This significant appointment occurs in a context characterized by its intricate geopolitical situation, particularly following the occupation's control over the heart of the city while the Palestinian Authority manages the surrounding areas. Dr. Al-Sharabati, who ran for office under the "Loyalty to Hebron" coalition, successfully united various political factions and independent talents, gaining the trust of the community to form a new municipal council.
The coalition was led by Taysir Abu Snina, a notable leader within the Fatah movement, who previously held the mayoral office until his arrest by occupation forces in September 2025. Upon his imprisonment, Al-Sharabati faced the formidable task of leading the municipality in an environment fraught with challenges. Her leadership comes at a time when the political landscape in Palestine is dynamic, and her role is seen as a pivotal moment for women in leadership positions within the region.
However, the journey has not been without peril. Dr. Al-Sharabati and her husband, Dr. Amjad Al-Hamouri, an ophthalmologist, have been subject to direct threats and gunfire, which she attributed to her stances in the political arena. This situation underscores the heightened risks faced by female leaders in Palestine, as they navigate both political and social challenges while striving to enhance their communities amidst ongoing conflict and instability.
