Ethiopia rebels gang-raped children: Amnesty

Amnesty International reported that rebels in Ethiopia's Oromia region have committed serious human rights abuses, including the gang rape of children, during their insurgency against the government.

Amnesty International's recent report reveals alarming instances of human rights violations in Ethiopia's Oromia region, focused on the actions of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Conducting interviews with ten survivors, including minors, the organization found that since 2020, the OLA has been involved in numerous cases of gang rape, sexual slavery, and summary executions. The report emphasizes the dire circumstances faced by women and girls in the region, where ongoing conflict since 2018 has created an environment rife with violence and lawlessness.

The testimony of a mother who witnessed her and her child's ordeal underscores the brutality of the assaults. For three weeks, they were held captive by OLA fighters, with numerous men perpetrating the rapes. Such traumatic experiences reflect a broader pattern of sexual violence against vulnerable populations amid ongoing conflict, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and protective measures for survivors.

With the Ethiopian military engaged in an ongoing battle against the insurgent OLA, the humanitarian crisis deepens. The findings of Amnesty International call for international attention and action to ensure justice for the victims and to curb the escalating human rights abuses occurring in Oromia. The report lays bare the consequences of prolonged conflict on civilians, particularly women and children, advocating for their rights and safety in the midst of chaos.
